Three Top Maine Campsites
Experience Clamming, Camping, and even Glamping
Maine is the ultimate camping destination in the Northeast; From ocean shores to mountains, blueberries to lobsters, Maine has it all. Tony Cameron, Director of Marketing & Communications at the Maine Tourism Association, emphasizes coming to Maine to experience nature. “You’re coming to Maine to relax and enjoy some of Maine’s best assets,” said Cameron, “that’s the outdoors.”
Whether seeking a rugged adventure or seeking a weekend of family fun, here is a list of the top 3 campsites Maine has to offer.
Roughin’ It with Nature – Blackwoods Campground
Become one with nature and enjoy fuss-free camping at Blackwoods Campground, located on Mount Desert Island in the middle of Acadia National Park. Prepare to leave everything behind, as there are no hookups or utilities- never fear, they do have showers. Utilize wilderness survival skills and book during the off season from December through March when only primitive camping is allowed.
Camping with All the Perks – Bar Harbor Oceanside KOA
Bar Harbor Oceanside KOA has it all, and those looking for more of a “glamping” experience will take delight in their on-site cabins. With cabins, enjoy all the amenities of home, including private bathroom, partial kitchen, and sleeping room for 4-6 people. Explore the Bar Harbor area with complimentary shuttle, or rent a bicycle and go adventuring in the nearby Acadia National Park.
Family Fun – Searsport Shores Ocean Campground
Searsport Shores Ocean Campground is one of the most notable campgrounds in Maine for family fun. “You can do a lot more than camping,” said Cameron, “there is a lot of family entertainment there.” Packing in the fun, Searsport Shores hosts daily activities, whether it’s art classes from a local college, clamming trips, or a movie and s’mores, entertainment is a priority. Feel free to bring the dogs along, all sites are pet friendly!
When is the best time of year to go camping in Maine? Summer is certainly the most popular time to visit Maine since local produce will be in bloom and the lobsters will be fresh. Be warned, camp sites book up quickly, so be sure to make reservations well in advance. Wait until after Labor Day and explore Maine’s campground in the fall for a less crowded camping experience. Enjoy beautiful fall foliage (and a lack of pollen) with perfect temperatures- not too scorching hot, but not too cold to sleep outside.
“Embrace it,” said Cameron, “Smell the air, smell the fire and enjoy the people who are around you.”
