Five Fun Things to do in October on Cape Cod
Pumpkin Picking to Hayrides
If fall is your cup of tea--head down to the Cape for some autumn fun. The days are still bright, but you'll need a jacket or sweater to ward off the ocean breezes.
Here are five fun things to do on Cape Cod in October...
The annual Wellfleet Oyster Fest is held every October. This year, it is October 15 & 16, 2016. Main Street is closed to traffic and opened to fun. There is entertainment, artisans, crafters and other vendors and live entertainment. There is beer, wine, great food and of course, oysters! All weekend, the area's best oyster shuckers go head to head. The shuck-off preliminaries take place on Saturday and the shuck-off finals take place on Sunday. $1,000 goes to the one who can shuck 24 oysters the fastest.
The harvest and Halloween fun starts early in October. Take a break from your Halloween decorating and hop aboard a scary hayride at Tobey Farms in Dennis. Hayrides are Friday through Sunday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. If you have little ones with you, best try the not-so-scary hayrides on Satuday and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Tobey Farms is at 352 Route 6A in Dennis.
Sure, you can pick a pumpkin at home, but why not carve a Cape Cod pumpkin? Several Cape Cod churches including West Yarmouth Congregational Church in West Yarmouth, First Congregational Church in Chatham, Unitarian Church of Barnstable in Barnstable and Bourne United Methodist Church in Bourne host a mighty fine pumpkin patch.
Unlike our neighbors to the north, Cape Cod is not best known for fall foliage. But we hold our own in the autumn. We are well known for our nature trails. Take advantage of the crisp, cool air and take a hike! Check out the Cape Cod National Seashore, one of the Mass Audubon sanctuaries on the Cape or one of the many trails preserved by the Cape's towns.
Thankfully, fresh seafood, plucked from local waters is always available. Many restaurants are open year-round and some of those that aren't are still open in October. Have a wonderful meal with a shorter wait.
