Go Back in Time at These Five Historic Cape Cod Homes
Cape History
Cape Cod has a reputation for its colonial past and this is perhaps best showcased in some of the old Captain's houses available for tours.
The 1736 Josiah Dennis Manse Museum is located in Dennis and is a saltbox home of the first minister of the town (and also the namesake for the town). The museum features artifacts of early Cape Cod life and there is even a 1745 one-room schoolhouse on the grounds.
This museum is open seasonally, so catch it on one of its last two remaining days before winter - Saturday September 13th or Saturday September 27th (the house is open from 1pm to 4pm on these days). Admission is by donation. Group tours are also offered May through October for groups of 6 or more and the cost is $3 per person. For more info about the tours, call 508-385-3528.
The Museum is located at 77 Nobscussett Road in Dennis and their phone number is 508-385-2232.
The Captain Bangs Hallet House Museum in Yarmouth is an old sea Captain's home (and the only one open regularly to visitors). Knowledgable docents lead guided tours through the home and tell fantastic tales of the Captain's time at sea.
The house is open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday through October 15th with tours at 1pm, 2pm, and 3pm. Admission is $3 for adults and $0.50 for kids and residents of Yarmouth and members of the Historic Society of Old Yarmouth are free.
The House is located on the Strawberry Lane Common in Yarmouthport right off of Route 6A.
The Hoxie House in Sandwich shows visitors what life was like on the Cape in the mid-17th century. Sandwich is also host to the Ben Nye Homestead and Museum and the Wing Fort House.
The Nye Homestead was built in 1678 and it is a great glimpse back into early life on the Cape. The Homestead is open through mid-October, Tuesdays through Saturdays, from noon to 4:30pm. Admission is $3 for adults and $1 for kids 12 and under. Call 508-888-4213 for more info.
The Wing Fort House is located at 69 Spring Hill Road in Sandwich and is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10am to 4pm up until September 30th. Off-season visits can be arranged by calling 508-833-1540.
